Ahggg, God, it's been so long since I dragged stuff out of my fingertips that I'm not sure where to begin. I don't know whether to talk about the long, long drought between posts, or whether to talk about my latest vacation, which was my best vacation ever, or whether to talk about my impending demotion/job change/firing. Believe me, all of these are on my mind. So, just for giggles, let's combine a couple.

We just got back a few days ago from Tulum. For those who don't know, Tulum is a place just over an hour's drive away from Cancun, to the south. It's at the end of what the Mexican government/tourist industry has named the Riviera Maya. It was never called that in history, ever. Back then, it was just the east coast of the Yucatan Penninsula. But "East Coast of the Yucatan Penninsula" just doesn't have the same ring to it as "Riviera Maya." Imagine Ricardo Montalban saying it. "Riviera Maya." Plus, Riviera Maya fits onto the brochures better.

The entire area is part of the Mexican government's long range plan to turn the entire coast into the vacation destination for the Western Hemisphere. The first part of the plan was the creation of Cancun. Once that was established, developers began to build megaresorts along the coast, working farther and farther south. Tulum was a natural point to use as one of the bookends. There are some spectacular Mayan ruins there, right on the coast. The cliffs behind the temple and the beach there are one of the sights in the world that you should see before you die. Several small towns along the coast are beginning to become larger tourist attractions, with lots of shopping, fishing, snorkeling, diving, shopping, reefs, piers, and shopping. Playa del Carmen is one such town. It's about twenty minutes by cab from Tulum, and has a lot of shopping. Did I mention that? It's also home to some of the more fabulous resorts along the coast.

Ah, but Tulum. We stayed at the resort closest to the ruins, called Dreams Spa and Resort Tulum. The resort was nice, the food was good, the drinks were plentiful, all that. The beach was perfect. If you want to go on a nice, relaxing vacation, where the sand is white and the water is phenominally clear, go there. I loved it. I will definitely go back, probably next year.

OK, Lost is coming on! More later, and Photos!
